ABSTRACT

The rapid economic development leads to excessive consumption of fossil energy, resulting in a large number of carbon emissions, which makes the sustainable development of China's economy and society face great challenges. Under the background of global warming and environmental deterioration, developing low-carbon economy has become an inevitable choice for China to change its development model and improve its international competitiveness. Technological progress is the first driving force to promote economic growth. However, the influence degree and mechanism of technological progress on the development of low-carbon economy are still unclear. Based on this, the paper proposes the concept of low-carbon GDP, which is used to measure the low-carbon economic development of 30 Chinese provinces. Then, the panel fixed effect model is used to study the effect degree and mechanism of technological progress on low-carbon GDP and the moderating effect of other factors on the relationship between them. The results show that, first, economically developed provinces and regions have higher per capita low-carbon GDP and low-carbon GDP index, but the speed and quality of low-carbon economic development are not necessarily higher. Second, technological progress can promote the growth of low-carbon GDP and make greater contributions to resources-poor regions. Third, improving local education can make technological progress more effective in low-carbon economic development. China needs to upgrade technological development by developing new and high-tech technologies, promoting new urbanization and strengthening education in order to promote low-carbon economic development.

ABSTRACT

Wound repair is a complex challenge for both clinical practitioners and researchers. Conventional approaches for wound repair have several limitations. Stem cell-based therapy has emerged as a novel strategy to address this issue, exhibiting significant potential for enhancing wound healing rates, improving wound quality, and promoting skin regeneration. However, the use of stem cells in skin regeneration presents several challenges. Recently, stem cells and biomaterials have been identified as crucial components of the wound-healing process. Combination therapy involving the development of biocompatible scaffolds, accompanying cells, multiple biological factors, and structures resembling the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) has gained considerable attention. Biological scaffolds encompass a range of biomaterials that serve as platforms for seeding stem cells, providing them with an environment conducive to growth, similar to that of the ECM. These scaffolds facilitate the delivery and application of stem cells for tissue regeneration and wound healing. This article provides a comprehensive review of the current developments and applications of biological scaffolds for stem cells in wound healing, emphasizing their capacity to facilitate stem cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and paracrine functions. Additionally, we identify the pivotal characteristics of the scaffolds that contribute to enhanced cellular activity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 treatment has achieved durable responses in TNBC patients, whereas a fraction of them showed non-sensitivity to the treatment and the mechanism is still unclear. METHODS: Pre- and post-treatment plasma samples from triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients treated with immunotherapy were measured by tandem mass tag (TMT) mass spectrometry. Public proteome data of lung cancer and melanoma treated with immunotherapy were employed to validate the findings. Blood and tissue single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data of TNBC patients treated with or without immunotherapy were analyzed to identify the derivations of plasma proteins. RNA-seq data from IMvigor210 and other cancer types were used to validate plasma proteins in predicting response to immunotherapy. RESULTS: A random forest model constructed by FAP, LRG1, LBP and COMP could well predict the response to immunotherapy. The activation of complement cascade was observed in responders, whereas FAP and COMP showed a higher abundance in non-responders and negative correlated with the activation of complements. scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq analysis suggested that FAP, COMP and complements were derived from fibroblasts of tumor tissues. CONCLUSIONS: We constructe an effective plasma proteomic model in predicting response to immunotherapy, and find that FAP+ and COMP+ fibroblasts are potential targets for reversing immunotherapy resistance.

ABSTRACT

As a chronic relapsing disease, psoriasis is characterized by widespread skin lesions. The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) is the most frequently utilized tool for evaluating the severity of psoriasis in clinical practice. Nevertheless, long-term monitoring and precise evaluation pose difficulties for dermatologists and patients, which is time-consuming, subjective and prone to evaluation bias. To develop a deep learning system with high accuracy and speed to assist PASI evaluation, we collected 2657 high-quality images from 1486 psoriasis patients, and images were segmented and annotated. Then, we utilized the YOLO-v4 algorithm to establish the model via four modules, we also conducted a human-computer comparison through quadratic weighted Kappa (QWK) coefficients and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). The YOLO-v4 algorithm was selected for model training and optimization compared with the YOLOv3, RetinaNet, EfficientDet and Faster_rcnn. The model evaluation results of mean average precision (mAP) for various lesion features were as follows: erythema, mAP = 0.903; scale, mAP = 0.908; and induration, mAP = 0.882. In addition, the results of human-computer comparison also showed a median consistency for the skin lesion severity and an excellent consistency for the area and PASI score. Finally, an intelligent PASI app was established for remote disease assessment and course management, with a pleasurable agreement with dermatologists. Taken together, we proposed an intelligent PASI app based on the image YOLO-v4 algorithm that can assist dermatologists in long-term and objective PASI scoring, shedding light on similar clinical assessments that can be assisted by computers in a time-saving and objective manner.

BACKGROUND: No trial of supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) for chloasma is available yet. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of Bole DA 30% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) combined with 10% niacinamide in treating chloasma. METHODS: This multicenter (n=15), randomized, double-blind, parallel placebo-controlled trial randomized the subjects (1:1) to Bole DA 30% SSA or placebo. The primary endpoint was the effective rate after 16 weeks using the modified melasma area severity index (mMASI) [(pretreatment-posttreatment)/pretreatment×100%]. RESULTS: This study randomized 300 subjects (150/group in the full analysis set, 144 and 147 in the per-protocol set). The total mMASI score, overall Griffiths 10 score, left Griffiths 10 score, and right Griffiths 10 score were significantly lower in the Bole DA 30% SSA group than in the placebo group (all P<0.001). One study drug-related AE and one study drug-unrelated adverse events (AE) were reported in the Bole DA 30% SSA group. No AE was reported in the placebo group. CONCLUSION: Bole DA 30% SSA combined with 10% niacinamide is effective and safe for treating chloasma. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ChiCTR2200065346.

BACKGROUND: To further clarify the acne profile of Chinese adult women, we included 1,156,703 adult women. An artificial intelligence algorithm was used to analyze images taken by high-resolution mobile phones to further explore acne levels in Chinese adult women. METHOD: In this study, we assessed the severity of acne by evaluating patients' selfies through a smartphone application. Furthermore, we gathered basic user information through a questionnaire, including details such as age, gender, skin sensitivity, and dietary habits. RESULTS: This study showed a gradual decrease in acne severity from the age of 25 years. A trough was reached between the ages of 40 and 44, followed by a gradual increase in acne severity. In terms of skin problems and acne severity, we have found that oily skin, hypersensitive skin, frequent makeup application and unhealthy dietary habits can affect the severity of acne. For environment and acne severity, we observed that developed city levels, cold seasons and high altitude and strong radiation affect acne severity in adult women. For the results of the AI analyses, the severity of blackheads, pores, dark circles and skin roughness were positively associated with acne severity in adult women. CONCLUSIONS: AI analysis of high-res phone images in Chinese adult women reveals acne severity trends. Severity decreases after 25, hits a low at 40-44, then gradually rises. Skin type, sensitivity, makeup, diet, urbanization, seasons, altitude, and radiation impact acne. Blackheads, pores, dark circles, and skin roughness are linked to acne severity. These findings inform personalized skincare and public health strategies for adult women.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and its primary complication, fragility fractures, contribute to substantial global morbidity and mortality. Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by glucocerebrosidase (GBA1) deficiency, leading to skeletal complications. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the GBA1 gene on osteoporosis progression in GD patients and the specific populations. METHODS: We selected 8115 patients with osteoporosis (T-score ≤ - 2.5) and 55,942 healthy individuals (T-score > - 1) from a clinical database (N = 95,223). Monocytes from GD patients were evaluated in relation to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, inflammasome activation, and osteoclastogenesis. An in vitro model of GD patient's cells treated with adeno-associated virus 9 (AAV9)-GBA1 to assess GBA1 enzyme activity, chitotriosidase activity, ER stress, and osteoclast differentiation. Longitudinal dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) data tracking bone density in patients with Gaucher disease (GD) undergoing enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) over an extended period. RESULTS: The GBA1 gene variant rs11264345 was significantly associated [P < 0.002, Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.06] with an increased risk of bone disease. Upregulation of Calnexin, NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) and Apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a C-terminal caspase recruitment domain (ASC) was positively associated with osteoclastogenesis in patients with GD. In vitro AAV9-GBA1 treatment of GD patient cells led to enhanced GBA1 enzyme activity, reduced chitotriosidase activity, diminished ER stress, and decreased osteoclast differentiation. Long-term bone density data suggests that initiating ERT earlier in GD leads to greater improvements in bone density. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated ER stress and inflammasome activation are indicative of osteoporosis development, suggesting the need for clinical monitoring of patients with GD. Furthermore, disease-associated variant in the GBA1 gene may constitute a risk factor predisposing specific populations to osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: Salicylic acid (SA) has been used for treatment of acne of different severity levels. However, there are few researches about the safety and efficacy for treatment of mild to moderate acne, and the improvement of the skin condition by using 2% supramolecular salicylic acid (SSA) compared to Davuwen Adapaline gel. METHODS: A multicenter, randomized, assessor-blind and parallel-controlled study was conducted. A total of 500 patients (trial group: 249, control group: 251) with mild to moderate (grade I-II) facial acne vulgaris were recruited in this study over a 16-week trial period. Patients in the trial group were treated with Broda 2% SSA hydrogel, while control group treated with Davuwen Adapaline gel once a day. The number of inflammatory papules, comedones, and pustules were counted and the rate of lesion reduction was calculated pre- and post-treatment. Then, the skin physiological indicators, including L*a*b*, TEWL, skin sebum and hydration were measured. Statistical analysis was conducted using SAS 9.4. Significance was set at p = 0.05. RESULTS: At the end of 12 weeks' therapy, the regression and markedly improvement rate of the trail group and the control group were 51.01% and 43.10% respectively, and there was no significant difference in the improvement rate between two groups (p = 0.0831). Although, there was no difference in adverse events rate between two groups, the adverse events rate of the trail group was 0.40%, a little lower than the control group (0.80%). Moreover, there was a significant difference in the numbers of pores at T1 between two groups. CONCLUSION: Both 2% SSA and Adapaline gel were equally effective in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. 2% SSA is worth the clinical promotion and application in mild to moderate acne vulgaris.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Ixekizumab, a monoclonal antibody against interleukin-17A, is efficacious and well tolerated for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. However, there are limited data on the real-world safety of ixekizumab in Chinese patient populations. We performed an observational study of ixekizumab for the treatment of moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in routine clinical practice in China. Here we present a further safety analysis of this study. METHODS: In this prospective, observational, single-arm, multicenter, post-marketing safety study, adults (≥18 years) with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis receiving ixekizumab were enroled at dermatology departments in hospitals across China and prospectively followed for 12 weeks or until their last dose of ixekizumab. In this analysis, we evaluated adverse events (AEs) of special interest (AESIs) identified using MedDRA® search strategies. We also analyzed AEs and AESIs occurring in greater than ten patients in subgroups by age (< 65/≥ 65 years), sex, body weight (< 60/60 kg to < 80/≥ 80 kg), renal impairment, hepatic impairment, history of tuberculosis, history of HBV infection, recent or active infection, history of allergic reaction/hypersensitivity, and number (0-1/2-4/5-7) of ixekizumab 80 mg injections after baseline until day 105. RESULTS: This analysis included 663/666 patients enrolled in the primary study. At least one AESI was reported in 224 (33.8%) patients and considered related to ixekizumab in 181 (27.3%); the most common were injection site reactions (n = 131, 19.8%), infections (n = 80, 12.1%), and allergic reactions/hypersensitivity events (n = 59, 8.9%). The proportion of patients with ≥ 1 AE was higher for females versus males (99/186, 53.2% versus 184/477, 38.6%, p = 0.0006). The proportion of patients with ≥ 1 AE increased with the number of ixekizumab injections after baseline [61/188 (32.4%) for zero to one injection, 151/338 (44.7%) for two to four injections, and 61/106 (57.5%) for five to seven injections; p = 0.0001]. CONCLUSIONS: In this real-world study, ixekizumab was well tolerated in Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, with no difference in safety across most patient subgroups.

This study explored visual perception skills and the ability to write according to standard stroke order and their links to the learning of Chinese handwriting. Thirty-seven children (aged 6-8) (15 boys and 22 girls) participated in a handwriting test and visual perception evaluation (Test of Visual Perceptual Skills-3rd Edition, TVPS-3). A computerized system was used to evaluate the stroke order accuracy, legibility, and automation of stroke movements. The stroke order accuracy was found to positively correlate with the scores of TVPS-3 (r = .498, p < .05) and to significantly correlate with handwriting legibility (r = .435, p < .05) as well as the automation of stroke movements (r = .494, p < .01). This study revealed that visual perception skill is related to stroke order accuracy and provides directions to assist students who encounter difficulties in learning Chinese handwriting.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of the deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) on the image quality and quantitative analysis of pulmonary nodules under ultra-low dose lung CT conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study with patient consent and included 56 patients with suspected pulmonary nodules. Patients were examined by both standard-dose CT (SDCT) and ultra-low-dose CT (ULDCT). SDCT images were reconstructed with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-V 40% (ASIR-V40%) (group A), while ULDCT images were reconstructed using ASIR-V40% (group B) and high-strength DLIR (DLIR-H) (group C). The three image sets were analyzed using a commercial computer aided diagnosis (CAD) software. Parameters such as nodule length, width, density, volume, risk, and classification were measured. The CAD quantitative data of different nodule types (solid, calcified, and subsolid nodules) and nodule image quality scores evaluated by two physicians on a 5-point scale were compared. RESULT: The radiation dose in ULDCT was 0.25 ± 0.08mSv, 7.2% that of the 3.48 ± 1.08mSv in SDCT (P < 0.001). 104 pulmonary nodules were detected (51/53 solid, 26/24 calcified and 27/27 subsolid in Groups A and (B&C), respectively). Group B had lower density for solid, calcified nodules, and lower volume and risk for subsolid nodules than Group A, while Group C had lower density for calcified nodules (P < 0.05), There were no significant differences in other parameters among the three groups (P > 0.05). Group A and C had similar image quality for nodules and were higher than Group B (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: DLIR-H significantly improves image quality than ASIR-V40% and maintains similar nodule detection and characterization with CAD in ULDCT compared to SDCT.

In coastal areas, the surface water has been simultaneously exposed to the algae blooms caused by eutrophication and the microplastics (MPs) pollution originating from active human activities. As a practical alternative to address these issues in drinking water plant, coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process is still confronted with the limited understanding about the comprehensive effects of MPs on algae-laden surface water (ASW) treatment. Considering the migration of MPs in nature environment and drinking water treatment process, this study first aims to systematically investigate the influence of MPs on algae cultivation, coagulation performance and membrane fouling development. The results of algae cultivation indicate that MPs stimulated the algae activity by 58 % and then constantly suppressed the secretion of protein-like, humic-like and polysaccharide-like metabolites. The variation of particle size distribution and zeta potential confirm that MPs acted as nuclei to facilitate the development of large coagulation flocs with an increasing average size from 82.6 µm to 107.6 µm, during which the negatively charged pollutants were neutralized and removed from ASW. According to the SEM images, MPs could destroy the structure of fouling layer on 50 kDa membranes during the filtration of ASW coagulation effluent. Its synergistic effect with the enhanced coagulation performance and the suppressed EOM secretion contributed to the alleviation of membrane fouling caused by overlapped large-sized foulants. However, the interaction between the enriched organic foulants by MPs and the deposited coagulants on 300 kDa membranes facilitated the development of cake layer, leading to the deterioration of membrane permeability. This study emphasizes the importance in concerning the existence of MPs during the treatment of ASW by coagulation-ultrafiltration combined process and their exact influence in water purification efficiency.

Objective: Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) generates an important supplementary form of blood supply in cancer, which many factors regulate. However, the effect of lysyl oxidase (LOX) on VM formation is unclear. In this study, gastric cancer tissues and cells were used to investigate the role of LOX in the formation of VM. Materials and Methods: The samples were collected from 49 patients with a final diagnosis of gastric cancer. According to metastasis (including lymph node metastases and distant metastases), gastric cancer samples were divided into metastasis and non-metastasis groups. Based on the degree of invasion, gastric cancer specimens were divided into T1 + T2 and T3 + T4 groups. The relative expression of LOX was detected using Western blot. The formation of VM was measured by double staining with CD34 and Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) in gastric cancer tissue slices, and the correlation between LOX and VM was analyzed with Pearson's correlation analysis. Gastric cancer cell line BGC-803 was treated with LOX, ß-aminopropionitrile (BAPN, an inhibitor of LOX), and AG1295 or AG1296 (inhibitors of the platelet-derived growth factor receptor). The formation of VM was then measured using PAS staining. The expression of platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR)α and PDGFRß in gastric cancer cells was detected by Western blot. Results: In gastric cancer samples, the level of LOX was higher in the metastasis group than in the non-metastasis group (P < 0.05) and in the T3 + T4 group than in the T1 + T2 group (P < 0.05). VM formation was greater in the T3+T4 group than in the T1+T2 group (P < 0.05) and in the metastasis group than in the non-metastasis group (P < 0.05). The expression level of LOX was positively correlated with VM formation (P < 0.01). In gastric cancer cells, LOX concentration was positively correlated with the degree of VM, and BAPN concentration was negatively correlated with the degree of VM (P <0.05). PDGFR levels in the T3+T4 and metastasis groups were relatively higher (P <0.01) and positively correlated with LOX levels in gastric cancer specimens (P < 0.01). The relative expression of PDGFRα and PDGFRß in gastric cancer cells was up-regulated with increasing LOX and downregulated with increasing BAPN (P < 0.05). With inhibition of PDGFRα and PDGFRß using AG1295 or AG1296, VM formation in gastric cancer cells decreased (P <0.05), but the number of VM structures increased while LOX was added (P < 0.05). Conclusion: LOX partially promotes the formation of VM in gastric cancer through the PDGF-PDGFR signaling pathway.

Two-dimensional inorganic-organic hybrid layered semiconductors are actively studied because of their naturally formed multiquantum well (MQW) structures and associated optical, photoelectric, and quantum optics characteristics. Silver benzeneselenolate (AgSePh, Ph = C6H5) is a new member of such hybrid layered materials, but has not fully been exploited. Herein, we present a quasi-solution method to prepare high quality free-standing AgSePh flake-like microcrystals by reacting diphenyl diselenide (Ph2Se2) with silver nanoparticles. The resultant AgSePh microflakes exhibit room-temperature (RT) resolvable MQW-induced quasi-particle quantization and interesting optical properties, such as three distinct excitonic resonance absorptions X1 (2.67 eV), X2 (2.71 eV), and X3 (2.83 eV) in the visible region, strong narrow-line width blue photoluminescence at ∼2.64 eV (470 nm) from the radiative recombination of the X1 exciton state, and a large exciton binding energy (∼0.35 eV). Furthermore, AgSePh microcrystals show high stability under water, oxygen, and heat environments, while above 220 °C, they will thermally decompose to silver and Ph2Se2 as evidenced by a combination of thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry and pyrolysis-coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry studies. Finally, a comparison is extended between AgSePh and other metal benzeneselenolates, benzenethiolates, and alkanethiolates to clarify differences in their solubility, decomposition/melting temperature, and pyrolytic products.

BACKGROUND: Labiaplasty is one of the top cosmetic procedures patients are seeking in the past two years. However, treatment of disease in posterior fourchette caused by various etiological factors was less investigated and neglected. METHODS: Three types of posterior fourchette deformity were proposed: (1) Redundant posterior fourchette, (2) Relaxed posterior fourchette, and (3) Constricted posterior fourchette. Local flap transfer technique was applied. Y-V-plasty and 5-Z-Flap-plasty were used to treat web type and tight type of the constricted posterior fourchette, respectively. Follow-ups were arranged on the Internet or at the outpatient clinic. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was utilized to evaluate sexual discomfort in the satisfaction questionnaires during follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 48 patients with constricted posterior fourchette deformity from May 2022 to May 2023 were reviewed in the study. Y-V-plasty could decrease VAS in patients with web-type deformity by 4.13 ± 1.46 (p<0.001). 5-Z-Flap-plasty could decrease VAS in patients with tight-type deformity by 3.76 ± 1.53 (p<0.05). Satisfaction rates of the web type and tight type were 93.1% (27/29) and 86.7% (13/15) respectively. Complications include two cases of hematoma, one case of persistent pain and two cases of dehiscence. CONCLUSION: Constricted posterior fourchette seriously affects the quality of life. Y-V-plasty and 5-Z-Flap-plasty can be utilized to treat the two subtypes of constricted posterior fourchette, which can effectively reduce the pain score of patients with high satisfaction and few long-term complications.

ABSTRACT

Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children can be attributed to a multitude of bacterial and viral pathogens. The objective of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of bacterial and viral AGE in children and to compare clinical characteristics between single and multiple enteric pathogen infections. A total of 456 stool samples were collected from outpatient children under 5 years old with AGE, which were subsequently analyzed for nine bacteria and three viruses using the Luminex xTAG® Gastrointestinal Pathogen Panel. The presence of at least one pathogen was detected in 260 cases (57.0%), with Salmonella being the predominant agent, followed by norovirus, Campylobacter, and rotavirus. A total of 69 cases (15.1%) exhibited positive results for two or more enteric pathogens. Although certain co-infections demonstrated significant differences in primary clinical features compared with mono-infections, no statistical variance was observed in terms of disease severity. In outpatient children from southern China, Salmonella emerged as the most prevalent causative agent of AGE, succeeded by norovirus and Campylobacter. This study underscores the burden posed by coinfections and highlights the clinical characteristics associated with AGE when accompanied by coinfections among children under 5 years old.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a role in demonstrating substantial utility in lung lesion imaging, detection, diagnosis, and evaluation. Previous studies have found that free-breathing star VIBE sequences not only have high image quality but also have a high ability to detect and display nodules. However, in our routine clinical practice, we have encountered suboptimal image quality in the free-breathing sequences of certain patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the impact of breath training on the quality of chest magnetic resonance imaging obtained during free-breathing sequences. METHODS: A total of 68 patients with lung lesions, such as nodules or masses detected via Computed Tomography (CT) examination, were prospectively gathered. They were then randomly divided into two groups: an observation group and a control group. Standard preparation was performed for all patients in both groups before the examination. The observation group underwent 30 minutes of breath training prior to the MRI examination additionally, followed by the acquisition of MRI free-breathing sequence images. The signal intensity (SI) and standard deviation (SD) of the lesion and adjacent normal lung tissue were measured, and the image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast signal-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the lesion were calculated for objective image quality evaluation. The subjective image quality of the two groups of images was also evaluated using a 5-point method. RESULTS: MRI examinations were completed in both groups. Significantly better subjective image quality (edge and internal structure clarity, vascular clarity, breathing and cardiac artifacts, and overall image quality) was achieved in the observation group compared to the control group (P<0.05). In addition, higher SNR and CNR values for disease lesions were observed in the observation group compared to the control group (t=4.35, P<0.05; t=5.35, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: It is concluded that the image quality of free-breathing sequences MRI can be improved through breath training before examination.

ABSTRACT

Nitric oxide (NO) is synthesized in all kingdoms of life, where it plays a role in the regulation of various physiological and developmental processes. In terms of endogenous NO biology, fungi have been less well researched than mammals, plants, and bacteria. In this review, we summarize and discuss the studies to date on intracellular NO biosynthesis and function in fungi. Two mechanisms for NO biosynthesis, NO synthase (NOS)-mediated arginine oxidation and nitrate- and nitrite-reductase-mediated nitrite reduction, are the most frequently reported. Furthermore, we summarize the multifaceted functions of NO in fungi as well as its role as a signaling molecule in fungal growth regulation, development, abiotic stress, virulence regulation, and metabolism. Finally, we present potential directions for future research on fungal NO biology.

ABSTRACT

The value of normative models in research and clinical practice relies on their robustness and a systematic comparison of different modelling algorithms and parameters; however, this has not been done to date. We aimed to identify the optimal approach for normative modelling of brain morphometric data through systematic empirical benchmarking, by quantifying the accuracy of different algorithms and identifying parameters that optimised model performance. We developed this framework with regional morphometric data from 37 407 healthy individuals (53% female and 47% male; aged 3-90 years) from 87 datasets from Europe, Australia, the USA, South Africa, and east Asia following a comparative evaluation of eight algorithms and multiple covariate combinations pertaining to image acquisition and quality, parcellation software versions, global neuroimaging measures, and longitudinal stability. The multivariate fractional polynomial regression (MFPR) emerged as the preferred algorithm, optimised with non-linear polynomials for age and linear effects of global measures as covariates. The MFPR models showed excellent accuracy across the lifespan and within distinct age-bins and longitudinal stability over a 2-year period. The performance of all MFPR models plateaued at sample sizes exceeding 3000 study participants. This model can inform about the biological and behavioural implications of deviations from typical age-related neuroanatomical changes and support future study designs. ABSTRACT

Tin dioxide (SnO2)-based electronic materials and gas sensors have attracted extensive attention from academia and industry. Herein we report the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) porous SnO2 flakes by thermal oxidation of 2D SnS flakes that serve as a self-sacrificial template. An oxidation-enabled, temperature-dependent matter conversion from SnS through three-phase SnS-SnS2-SnO2 (400 °C) and two-phase SnS2-SnO2 (600 °C) to pure-phase SnO2 (≥800 °C) is disclosed by means of combined XRD, TG-DSC and XPS studies. Meanwhile, the associated chemical reactions and the mass and heat changes during this solid-state conversion process are clarified. The as-prepared 2D SnO2 flakes exhibit structural porosity with tunable pore sizes and crystallite sizes/crystallinity, resulting in superior potential for NO2 sensing. At the optimized operating temperature of 200 °C, the prototype gas sensors made of porous SnO2 flakes show competitive sensing parameters in a broad NO2 concentration range of 50 ppb-10 ppm in terms of high response, faster response/recovery speeds, and good selectivity and stability. A sensing mechanism involving the adsorption and desorption of NO2/O2 molecules and the possible surface reactions is further rationalized for the SnO2 NO2 gas sensors.
